Navigating The Dynamic Landscape of Career Change

Change is a natural and inescapable part of life. In today’s ever-evolving workforce, change isn’t just a constant.

Careers are shapeshifting, influenced by the dynamic interplay of industry trends, technological leaps, economic currents, and societal shifts.

The traditional linear career path is evolving, prompting a need to view change as a gateway to unforeseen opportunities.

Whether shifting industries, pursuing further education, or exploring entrepreneurial ventures, the ability to identify transferable skills and leverage them in different contexts becomes crucial.

Embracing a proactive approach to career transitions is the secret to not just surviving but thriving in the face of change. Picture these transitions not as mere shifts but as golden opportunities for personal and professional growth

This transformative wave is evident in the soaring job mobility rates and the ascent of the “career portfolio,” where individuals wholeheartedly embrace diverse part-time or freelance opportunities.

The once-linear career path is undergoing a metamorphosis, urging us to perceive change not as a hurdle but as a gateway to unforeseen possibilities that enhance our lives.

Welcome to the digital age, where the demand for skills transcends traditional boundaries. Professionals now have the power to harness online platforms, development courses, and mentorship programs for continuous learning.

For our existing leaders and interested others, consider expanding your career portfolio by venturing into private coaching/consulting, with the CYPFS program.

The CYPFS is a complete business in a box to support your transition easily, effortlessly, and cost effectively.

Happy Coaching!

A Coaching Approach to Student Wellbeing

When I graduated as a social worker in the mid 1980’s, the term “coaching” was more synonymous with sports and rehabilitation fields. Since then, I have witnessed the rapid growth of coaching across the health, educational and youth sectors.

At Life Business, we’ve had the distinct privilege of being part of this transformation since the early 2000s. Our passion for coaching runs deep, as we have witnessed first hand the positive impact it can bring to the lives of young people, as well as our own life and business too.

Coaching is a holistic, strengths-based, and student-centred approach to wellbeing that schools can implement across the organisation. It is holistic, because it recognises the interconnected nature of mental health and wellbeing, by addressing emotional, social, physical, and financial health, as well as academic performance and career development, plus more.

Coaching is a powerful early intervention model, that focuses on “optimal wellbeing” and performance, rather than treating the symptoms of ill health or problematic behaviours after they present. Being person-centred, it offers tailored support, addressing students individual needs and goals rather than adopting a more universal “one-fits-all”  approach.

It provides students with proven tools and strategies, that help tap into their unique strengths and capabilities, empowering them to be more proactive with their self-care on a day to day basis. Regular check-ins and feedback in group or individual sessions with a coach, peer, parent or teachers, will keep them accountable, and ensure they stay motivated and on-track to make meaningful and lasting change. This approach aligns perfectly with schools’ mission to nurture well-rounded young people, equipped with the emotional and social skills they need to thrive in to adulthood.

If you are interested in introducing a coaching approach to your wellbeing programs in 2024, jump into any of our training workshops, or book a short demonstration time with us to discuss how it can work. If you are already trained as a CYPFS leader you can join complimentary online refresher training.

Happy Coaching!

Introducing Emma Bennett from Yellow Canary Coaching & Consulting

We are excited to Introduce Emma, our latest Coaching Young People For Success accredited youth coach.

Emma is a highly experienced leadership & business coach and member of the ICF, with an extra special passion for coaching young people. As a parent of teenagers herself she knows first hand how challenging it can be to navigate the steps into adulthood for young people and their parents too. Here is her personal story about her journey into youth coaching.

“Have you ever felt like the choices you made were influenced by what others thought you should do? It’s a common experience for both adults and young people. We often assume that those who are older and wiser know best. But let me tell you a secret:, they don’t.

When I look back on my own youth, I vividly remember the conversations with family, teachers, and career counsellors about subjects to choose in school, further education, and career planning. Those discussions typically revolved around what I was good at, the earning potential, and the societal status associated with certain jobs. I can honestly say that I cannot recall a single conversation that delved into my values, interests, or invited me to think about what a successful and happy career and life would truly mean for me.

As a 15 or 16-year-old living in the North of England, I could never have imagined the path my life would take. I would have been stunned to learn that I would spend years living and working in Sweden, and eventually end up in Australia. If you had asked me back then if I saw myself working in heavy industry or in male-dominated environments, I would have been shocked. Yet, here I am, with a wealth of experience in financial services, manufacturing, medical technologies, and the education sector.

In my work as a coach with adults, I often encounter individuals who recognise that their careers have not turned out as they had hoped. They feel trapped and desire a career transition, but external responsibilities make it incredibly challenging. They may believe that it’s too late to start over or that they can’t afford to make a change.

It is these experiences that have driven me to become a youth coach. What if we could empower our young people to have more agency over their decisions? What if we could support them to explore alternative educational and career pathways? Imagine if they understood that while others may have thoughts and opinions about what they should do, ultimately, they are the captains of their own ships. This is not to say that they shouldn’t seek the wisdom and experience of others or ask for advice, but they are not obliged to blindly follow it.

As a youth coach, my mission is to help young people discover their own passions, interests, and values. I want to guide them in making informed decisions, while reminding them that their dreams and aspirations matter. Together, we can create a future where young individuals have the confidence to chart their own paths and embrace the endless possibilities that lie ahead.”

Language tips to create a growth mindset:

plant

One of the most beautiful gifts in the world is the gift of encouragement.

When you encourage someone, you help that person over a threshold they might otherwise never have crossed on their own.

Here are some language  tips to use to create a growth mindset:

Emphasize Effort: Encourage the belief that effort and persistence are key to success, rather than innate abilities or talent. Use phrases such as “Your hard work and dedication will pay off” or “Keep pushing yourself and you’ll achieve your goals”.

Encourage Learning: Encourage a love of learning by emphasizing that mistakes and challenges are opportunities to grow and improve. Use phrases such as “Every mistake is a chance to learn something new” or “Challenges are a chance to stretch and develop new skills”.

Promote Self-Reflection: Encourage self-reflection to help individuals identify their strengths and areas for improvement. Use phrases such as “Take time to reflect on your progress and set new goals” or “Think about what you can do differently next time to improve your results”.

Foster Resilience: Encourage the belief that setbacks and failures are temporary and can be overcome. Use phrases such as “Don’t give up, keep pushing through the tough times” or “Believe in yourself and keep trying, you’ll get there”.

Focus on the Journey: Encourage individuals to focus on the process of growth and development, rather than just the end result. Use phrases such as “Enjoy the journey of growth and development” or “The process of learning is just as important as the end result”.

Lead Powerful Coaching Conversations

Card Image_Social Media Post

Assisting young people can be a challenge, especially when decisions need to be made and action needs to be taken and they turn to you for quick answers.

When you apply a coaching approach to your conversation the coach assumes that every young person…

  • is the expert in their own life even when they say they are not.
  • has the solutions within themselves even if they say they don’t.
  • is creative, resourceful & whole.
Coaching cards are a powerful projective tool to help youth professionals facilitate deeper conversations quickly and with ease as the illustrations on the cards are a visual stimulus that takes the individual beyond the surface level to a deeper part of themselves, where they connect to their  ‘real voice’, sparking deep meaningful and life changing conversations.

The responses using card decks can act as a mediator or a catalyst for individuals to open up and share their inner most thoughts and feelings accessing their creativity,  imagination, and problem solving that might otherwise be unknown to them.

For the coach card decks helps to
  • ask the right questions to assist individuals to gain insights and increase self -awareness
  • easily assist individuals set their own goals and set steps they will take
The narrative co-authored by the coach and the individual becomes rich in possibilities and clear targeted action. Cards can function as a visual anchor and easily accompany the individuals in their daily life as reminder of the actions steps that were designed with their coach.

“I have been using the POWER coaching cards with my clients. The cards are both subtle and powerful as well as provoking in a positive way. Wow – the results are fascinating and revealing. The process and its employment has been truly rewarding. I have seen clients excited, rewarded, connected, confronted, exposed and a little scared. So much to explore and examine.”

The Wellbeing Team @ Daylesford Secondary College

With the support of Rosie Mullany from the Ballarat School Focussed Youth Service the Wellbeing team from Daylesford Secondary College in Victoria completed their Coaching Young People For Success life and career coaching skills training in early 2022.

The team all received the resources they needed to introduce a strengths based coaching program with a few targeted groups of students over the year. The aim of the project was to assist these students connect to their strengths and identify some inspiring and personalised life, career or wellbeing goals and be supported to work towards them.

Bridget Franc, the Head of Wellbeing at the College said,

“We have delivered the My Career Coach Module with all our Year 12 students. It was incorporated into our Year 12 Camp and compliments our school’s motto: ‘Shape the Future’”. The Careers Coaching were also delivered to a group of Year 10 students to support transition into the senior school. This strength-based program helps young people to see beyond their immediate world and fosters a sense of hope and meaning for their future.”

Our Wellbeing Team have also used the POWER Coaching Cards to support young people in individual consultations, to help them find a sense of purpose and source of motivation.”

Comments from the other coaches…

• “The kids genuinely enjoy getting together and have asked me without prompting if we’re re-starting (the program) this term, which is very nice to hear them be excited about a positive thing.”

• “Some of the students have started thinking about small goals just as a process that’s becoming normal for them.”

• “The main benefit of this program so far is having some neglected kids get given some positive attention.”

• “I think the program is fabulous, although we chose a very disengaged group to work with that did provide many challenges.”
