As youth coaches and educators, one of the most powerful things we can do is help young people imagine new possibilities for their lives. Possibility thinking isn’t just about dreaming—it’s the foundation of growth, a launching pad for real-life action. When young people picture a new possibility, they’re already halfway there. It helps them look beyond doubt and uncertainty, and begin to dream big, even when the path forward isn’t yet clear.
Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” and “Your imagination is a preview of life’s coming attractions”
And he was right — because the imagination is where hope lives, solutions are found and transformation begins.
The first step in our five step P.O.W.E.R Coaching Model is to coach for P = Possibilities. We start by helping young people shift their focus from the problem to the possibility. Instead of staying stuck in what’s not working, we guide them to picture how they’d love things to be—in their career, relationships, school, or personal life.
Here are a few simple but powerful visioning activities you can use with young people:
1. Vision Board – Use images and words to create a visual representation of their ideal future.
2. Life Timeline – Map out key milestones they’d love to reach over the short term and next 5–10 years. A wish list!
3. The Life Wheel – Reflect on different life areas and imagine what a “10/10” would look like in each. Eg: How would you love your health to be or your friendships to be? What would that look like?
4. Letter to Future Me – Write a letter to themselves 5 years from now, describing their hopes, goals, and growth.
When a young person starts to ask, “What if I could…?”, they begin to see beyond their current situation. They start to believe that change is possible, and that they have the power to shape their future.
